Beginning in 1994, ATEEC conducted a series of DACUMs on environmental technology occupations. The 1995 ATEEC Fellows, with the assistance of industry, began studying the job tasks listed on the DACUM charts to detemine the underlying math, science, technical, and critical thinking knowledge and skills needed to perform those tasks.
Another important step was to determine if there is a common core of math, science, and technical knowledge and skills needed across ALL environmental technology occupations. The Fellows studied a matrix of knowledge and skills relative to six environmental technology occupations and were able to identify a common core. The 1996 and 1997 Fellows in turn have studied the common core in order to recommend a course of study for an articulated high school plus two-year college environmental technology program (i.e., a "4+2" or "tech prep" program).
The list of knowledge and skills that emerged from the process has been continually refined and added to. New knowledge and skills concepts may be added to the core as we learn more about the tasks performed in various environmental technology occupations. You are invited to make suggestions to ATEEC on wording of concepts.
